Is confession over the phone permitted?

In the Orthodox Church, the Sacrament of Repentance and Confession cannot be administered over the phone.
The canonical and theological reasons for this include:
1. The Incarnational Nature of the Holy Sacraments
All Holy Mysteries (Sacraments) in the Church are physical, tangible encounters that reflect the Incarnation of our Lord Jesus Christ. Just as the Holy Eucharist requires physical elements and physical communion, and Holy Baptism requires physical water and immersion, the Mystery of Repentance and Confession requires the physical presence of both the penitent and the authorized priest.
2. The Laying on of Hands and the Prayer of Absolution
The essential liturgical action of the sacrament involves the priest placing the cross and his hands upon the head of the penitent while reciting the Prayer of Absolution. This physical laying on of hands is an unbroken apostolic tradition through which the authority given by Christ to the Apostles to forgive and retain sins (John 20:23; Matthew 18:18) is exercised. An absolution cannot be read over a telephone line or digital device, as the sacramental grace is tied to the physical gathering and action of the Church.
3. Spiritual Counseling vs. Sacramental Confession
There is a clear distinction between spiritual guidance and the Sacrament of Confession:
- Spiritual Guidance: It is entirely permissible to call your father of confession to seek advice, ask questions about spiritual struggles, discuss urgent matters, or receive guidance if you are traveling or separated by distance.
- The Sacrament Itself: Disclosing sins and receiving the liturgical absolution must wait until you can meet with the priest face-to-face.
In Cases of Distance or Emergency
If a person is separated from their father of confession due to travel or illness, they should:
- Repent genuinely before God in their personal prayers, examining their conscience.
- Contact their spiritual father for guidance over the phone if needed.
- Confess to an Orthodox priest who is locally accessible to receive the sacramental absolution, or arrange to meet their regular father of confession in person at the earliest opportunity.
