I do not have a Father of Confession.

The Coptic Orthodox perspective is clear: the spiritual life is not meant to be lived in isolation. While you can begin a prayer rule on your own, it is vital that you seek a Father of Confession as soon as possible. In our tradition, the priest is the physician of the soul, and attempting to navigate spiritual heights without a guide can lead to spiritual pride or burnout.

However, until you are able to visit a parish and be assigned a regular confessor, you can adopt a "Rule of the Beginner" based on the foundational prayers of the Church. This rule is designed to be easily memorized, so you do not need any external tools.

1. The Opening (Standing)

Make the Sign of the Cross and say:

"In the Name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit, One God. Amen."

Perform three prostrations saying:

  1. "I worship You, O Christ, with Your Good Father and the Holy Spirit, for You have come and saved us."
  2. "Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner."
  3. "God, be merciful to me, a sinner."

2. The Core Prayer (The Lord’s Prayer)

Recite the Lord’s Prayer. This is the prayer given by Christ Himself and is the foundation of all Coptic liturgical life.

3. The Trisagion

This is the "Hymn of the Angels" used by the Coptic Church in every hour of the day:

"Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, who was born of the Virgin, have mercy on us.
Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, who was crucified for us, have mercy on us.
Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, who rose from the dead and ascended into the heavens, have mercy on us."

4. The Jesus Prayer (The Continuous Rule)

Use your fingers to count. On each of the 12 joints of your fingers, repeat:

"My Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner."

Do three cycles of your hand (this equals 36 prayers, near the traditional 41).

5. Examination of Conscience

As noted in our records regarding Preparation for Confession, the most valuable thing in the eyes of God is the confession of the sin that weighs most on the conscience. Take a moment of silence to:

  • Acknowledge your faults of the day.
  • Ask God for the resolve to tell these sins to a priest when you find one.
  • Pray: "Forgive me, O Lord, forgive me, and destroy me not with my iniquities."

6. The Conclusion

The "Conclusion of Every Hour":

"Have mercy on us, O God, and have mercy on us... Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord of Sabaoth..."

If you haven't memorized the full conclusion yet, simply say:

"O Lord, hear us, have mercy on us, and forgive us our sins. Amen."

Next Steps

The Coptic Church is focused on the Sacramental Mystery of Confession. A rule without a priest is like a patient taking medicine without a doctor's diagnosis. Use this rule to build a "broken spirit and a humbled heart" (Psalm 50:17), which God will not despise. Your primary goal this week should be to find a Coptic Orthodox parish and ask to speak with the priest about becoming his spiritual child.
