The father of Noah was Lamech.
According to the Book of Genesis, Lamech was the son of Methuselah and was the ninth generation from Adam through the line of Seth.
When Noah was born, Lamech gave him his name—which means "rest" or "comfort"—prophesying about his son's role in the destiny of humanity. He said:
"This one will comfort us concerning our work and the toil of our hands, because of the ground which the Lord has cursed" (Genesis 5:29).
In Coptic Orthodox theology, this prophecy points toward the rest that would come after the Flood, and ultimately, it foreshadows the true rest and comfort brought to the world by Jesus Christ.
It is important to distinguish this Lamech (the descendant of Seth) from the other Lamech mentioned in Genesis 4, who was a descendant of Cain and a man of violence. The Lamech who was the father of Noah belonged to the righteous lineage that "walked with God." Lamech lived to be 777 years old and died five years before the Great Flood.
