What if Orthodoxy is 90% accurate, not 100%?

To suggest that Orthodoxy is only "90% accurate" is to fundamentally misunderstand the nature of the Church and the promise of our Lord Jesus Christ. From the Coptic Orthodox perspective, the Church is the "Pillar and Ground of the Truth" (1 Timothy 3:15). If the Church were only 90% accurate, she would cease to be the Body of Christ and would instead be merely a human philosophy or a social club.

Here is why 100% accuracy in dogma is a theological necessity:

1. The Promise of the Holy Spirit

Our Lord promised His Apostles that the Holy Spirit would "guide you into all truth" (John 16:13). He did not say "most of the truth" or "90% of the truth." If the Church, which is guided by the Holy Spirit, could err in her dogmas (her 100% core truths), then Christ’s promise would be a lie. As Coptic Orthodox Christians, we believe the Holy Spirit has preserved the faith delivered once and for all to the saints.

2. The Danger of the "10% Error"

In theology, a small error in the beginning becomes a massive heresy in the end.

  • Arius didn't deny 90% of Christianity; he mostly agreed with the Bible but erred on the nature of the Son. That "small" percentage of error led to the denial of the divinity of Christ and the destruction of the hope of salvation.
  • Nestorius shared much of the faith, but by refusing to call St. Mary the Theotokos, he split Christ into two, making our union with God impossible.
  • Protestants kept the Bible and the Trinity but rejected the Sacraments and the Priesthood. That "small" percentage of rejection led to thousands of fractured denominations today, each with a different "truth."

As the Fathers teach, a small crack in the hull of a ship will eventually sink the entire vessel. You cannot have 90% of a Savior or 90% of a Sacrament.

3. Dogma vs. Human Opinion

We must distinguish between Dogma (Divine Truth) and Human Opinion (Theologoumena).

  • Dogma (100% Absolute): The Trinity, the Incarnation, the One Nature of the Word Incarnate, the Seven Sacraments, and the Virginity of St. Mary. These are non-negotiable and 100% true.
  • Human Practice/Opinion: The color of a priest's robe, the specific melody of a hymn, or a private opinion on a non-defined matter (like the exact date of the end of the world) is not a dogma. In these areas, there is room for variation.

However, when we speak of "Orthodoxy," we are speaking of the Faith. And the Faith must be whole. St. Athanasius did not suffer five exiles for "90% of the truth." He suffered because the Truth is an indivisible whole.

4. The Church as a Hospital

If you go to a hospital and the doctor is 90% accurate about your medicine, but 10% of the ingredients are poison, you will die. The Church is the "Spiritual Hospital." To be healed from death and corruption, we need the 100% pure medicine of the Orthodox Faith.

5. Final Reckoning

To suggest 90% accuracy is to adopt a secular, academic, or "Protestant" mindset where human reason is the final judge of God’s revelation. In the Coptic Tradition, we submit our reason to the. We do not "judge" the Faith; the Faith judges us.

If Orthodoxy were 90% accurate, we would be no better than the Catholics or the Jews who have strayed from the fullness of the revelation. But because she is the Body of God on earth, she is the repository of the Fullness. Truly, as we say in the Liturgy: Amen. Amen. Amen. I believe. This "I believe" is an affirmation of the absolute, 100% Truth of the Mystery.
