What does the Coptic Church believe about the rapture?

The Coptic Orthodox Church does not believe in the "Rapture" as it is popularly defined by modern Protestant denominations (specifically Dispensational Premillennialism). The idea that believers will be "snatched up" secretly to heaven to escape a period of Great Tribulation before a literal thousand-year earthly reign of Christ is a 19th-century invention that is foreign to the Apostolic faith and the Holy Scriptures as interpreted by the Church Fathers.
Our faith remains steadfast in the traditional, historical understanding of the Second Coming of Our Lord Jesus Christ.
1. One Single Second Coming
We believe in only one Second Coming of Christ. We do not believe in a "secret" coming for the Church followed later by a "visible" coming. As we confess in the Orthodox Creed: "He shall come again in His glory to judge the living and the dead; whose kingdom shall have no end." When He returns, it will be visible to all, preceded by the sign of the Cross in the clouds, and it will mark the end of this age and the beginning of the eternal judgment.
2. The Interpretation of 1 Thessalonians 4:17
The "Rapture" doctrine relies heavily on a literalistic reading of St. Paul's words: "Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air."
In the Coptic tradition, this "meeting" in the air is an honorific welcome for the returning King. Just as a city's residents would go out to meet a victorious king returning from battle to usher him into the city, the faithful will rise to meet the Lord as He descends to earth for the General Resurrection and Judgment. We do not go up to stay in the air or to disappear from the earth for seven years; we rise to be with Him as He concludes human history.
3. Participation in Tribulation
The Coptic Church is a Church of Martyrs. The idea of being "raptured" to avoid suffering is contrary to the entire history and theology of our faith. Christ told us, "In the world you will have tribulation" (John 16:33).
We believe the Church will indeed endure the period of the Antichrist and the Great Tribulation. God does not "remove" His children from suffering; rather, He grants them the Grace to endure it and be perfected through it.
4. Rejection of Chiliasm (Millennialism)
The Rapture is tied to the "Millennium"—the idea of a 1,000-year earthly kingdom. The Coptic Church rejects "Chiliasm" (the belief in a literal 1,000-year reign on earth). We follow the teaching of St. Augustine and the Alexandrian Fathers:
- The "one thousand years" mentioned in Revelation 20 is a symbolic number representing the complete period of the Church's life on earth, which began with Christ’s first coming and victory over Satan.
- Christ’s Kingdom is spiritual and is lived within the heart and through the Sacraments.
5. Finality of Judgment
There is no "second chance" after a secret rapture. When the Lord returns, the General Resurrection of the dead occurs immediately. Every eye shall see Him, and every person will be judged according to their deeds.
The "Rapture" is a heretical innovation of the 1830s that contradicts the Holy Gospel and the consensus of the Fathers. We do not look for a secret escape; we look for the glorious, public, and final appearing of our Great God and Savior Jesus Christ.
