In Orthodox theology, the celestial world is organized into a Heavenly Hierarchy consisting of nine ranks (choirs) divided into three triads or groups.
The Three Hierarchies and Nine Ranks
1. The Highest Hierarchy (Closest to God)
This triad stands in the immediate presence of the Divine Majesty, glorifying God unceasingly:
- Seraphim: The name means "flaming" or "burning." They are aflame with divine love and ignite that love in others. As recorded by the Prophet Isaiah (Isaiah 6:2), they have six wings: two to cover their faces, two to cover their feet, and two to fly, crying out: "Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord of hosts, heaven and earth are full of Your holy glory."
- Cherubim: The name signifies "fullness of knowledge" or "great understanding." They are described as being full of eyes, radiant with the contemplation of the divine mysteries, transmitting spiritual wisdom and enlightenment.
- Thrones: The spiritual foundations through which the righteousness and judgments of God are manifested.
(Note on differing descriptions: Theological and catechetical texts present slight variations regarding the pinnacle of this order. In the curriculum text G3 - The Golden Rule and the study 7SA4B-Angels, the Seraphim are recognized as the highest ranking order closest to God, followed by the Cherubim. Conversely, in the theological writing Orthodox Spirituality by Fr. Dumitru Stăniloae, the Cherubim are identified as occupying the highest step in intimate nearness to God, receiving divine light directly without intermediary.)
2. The Middle Hierarchy (Governing the Cosmos)
This triad reflects divine order, power, and providence in the governance of creation:
- Dominions
- Virtues
- Powers
(According to the classification outlined in G3 - The Golden Rule, these three orders make up the intermediate group, overseeing the operations and spiritual warfare of the cosmos.)
3. The Lowest Hierarchy (Closest to Humanity)
This triad directly serves and interacts with mankind, delivering divine messages and providing guardianship:
- Principalities / Rulers (where counted among the lower triad in classic patristic orders, while G3 - The Golden Rule arranges the lowest group specifically as Archangels and Angels)
- Archangels: Chief messengers of significant divine revelations.
- Angels: Personal guardians and messengers ministering directly to individual human souls.
The Seven Archangels
According to the liturgical tradition of the Church (as documented in the text G3 - The Golden Rule), there are seven principal Archangels who stand before the throne of God:
- Michael – The chief of the heavenly hosts and intercessor for the waters of the Nile and the fruits of the earth.
- Gabriel – The messenger of joyful tidings, notably the Annunciation to the Holy Theotokos.
- Raphael – The companion, helper, and healer.
- Suriel – The trumpeter and minister of divine order.
- Sedakiel
- Sarathiel
- Ananial
Each archangel heads legions of angelic spirits that carry out the divine will, glorifying the Holy Trinity and interceding on behalf of mankind.
