Explain the Trinity so I will understand during Holy Week.

In the Coptic Orthodox tradition, especially during the deep spiritual journey of Holy Pascha, the mystery of the Holy Trinity is not just a dry academic concept, but a living reality revealed through the Passion and Victory of our Lord Jesus Christ.
To understand the Trinity—the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit—we look at it through the lens of one Essence and three Persons.
1. The Unity of Essence
We believe in One God. There are not three gods. They share the exact same divine nature, power, and will. During the Liturgy and the Pascha prayers, we repeatedly cry out "Holy, Holy, Holy" to the one Lord.
- The Analogy of the Sun: Think of the sun. There is the sun's disk (the Father), the light that comes from it (the Son), and the heat that radiates from it (the Holy Spirit). You cannot have the sun without its light or its heat; they are distinct, but they are one sun.
2. The Distinction of Persons
While they are one in essence, they are distinct in their "properties":
- The Father: The "Source" or "Root." He is unbegotten.
- The Son: The "Word" or "Wisdom" of the Father. He is eternally begotten of the Father.
- The Holy Spirit: The "Life-Giver." He eternally proceeds from the Father.
3. Understanding Through Holy Week
During Holy Week, the Trinity is revealed in the work of our salvation:
- The Father sends the Son: "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son." During the Pascha, when we chant "Thine is the Power, the Glory...", we are acknowledging the authority the Son has from the Father to lay down His life and take it up again.
- The Son offers Himself: On the Cross, it is the Person of the Son—the Word Incarnate—who suffers. The Father and the Spirit do not suffer in their nature, but they are not "absent." The Trinity is never divided. Even while Christ was on the Cross in His humanity, He was ruling the universe with the Father and the Spirit in His divinity.
- The Holy Spirit confirms the Mystery: It is through the Holy Spirit that the sacrifice of the Cross becomes effective for us in the Sacraments.
4. Guarding Against Error
As Coptic Orthodox Christians, we must be straightforward in rejecting false teachings:
- Against the Jews: We reject the idea that God is "one person" who cannot have a Son. We know from the Prophets that the Word of God is eternal.
- Against Heretics (like the Arians and modern Protestants/Jehovah's Witnesses): We reject any idea that the Son is "less" than the Father. If the Son were not fully God, His death on the Cross would not have the power to save the entire world from an infinite debt of sin.
During the Pascha, when you hear the hymns and see the icons (like those by Dr. Isaac Fanous), remember that every prayer is addressed to the Father, through the Son, in the Holy Spirit.
When you chant the Trisagion, remember that in our Coptic Rite, we apply these words directly to Christ—acknowledging that the One who was crucified for us is also the "Holy Immortal" God, one of the Holy Trinity.
