Promise of Easter

On the night of Bright Saturday, as we read the Apocalypse, the "Promise of Easter" is the transition from the darkness of the tomb to the eternal light of the Resurrection.
In our Coptic Orthodox tradition, Easter is not just a historical event, but the fulfillment of every promise God made to humanity.
The Promise of Eternal Life
- 1 John 2:25: "And this is the promise that He has promised us—eternal life."
- John 11:25: "Jesus said to her, ‘I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live.’"
- Revelation 1:18: "I am He who lives, and was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore. Amen. And I have the keys of Hades and of Death."
The Promise of Victory Over Death
On Bright Saturday, we emphasize that Christ’s death was the "poison" that destroyed death itself.
- Hosea 13:14: "I will ransom them from the power of the grave; I will redeem them from death. O Death, I will be your plagues! O Grave, I will be your destruction!"
- 1 Corinthians 15:54-55: "Death is swallowed up in victory. O Death, where is your sting? O Hades, where is your victory?".
The Promise of a New Creation
The "Apocalypse" we read on this night concludes with the promise of the new heaven and new earth, which began on Easter morning.
- Revelation 21:5: "Then He who sat on the throne said, ‘Behold, I make all things new.’ And He said to me, ‘Write, for these words are true and faithful.’"
- 2 Corinthians 5:17: "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new."
Liturgical Reflections
- "The Bridge to Light": "Tonight, as we conclude the Apocalypse, we stand at the threshold of the Resurrection. The Promise of Easter is that no tomb can hold the Light of the World."
- "The Sealed Tomb": "The stone was rolled away not so He could get out, but so we could see that He had already fulfilled His promise to rise."
- "From Mourning to Joy": "The Promise of Easter is that our Saturday of waiting always leads to a Sunday of rejoicing."
Using the Language of the Church
- Resurrection:
- Christ is Risen!:!
- Truly He is Risen!:!
The Apocalypse is the scriptural "Amen" to the Promise of Easter; it tells us how the story ends—with the Lamb sitting on the throne and His people reigning with Him forever.
