Was St. Mary saved before or after the Cross?

In the Coptic Orthodox perspective, the salvation of the Virgin Mary—and indeed all the righteous who died before the Crucifixion—was made effective at the moment of the Cross and the Resurrection, but its grace was applied to her in a unique and preparatory way throughout her life.

To understand this according to the true Orthodox faith, we must distinguish between the source of salvation and the application of salvation:

1. The Source: The Cross and Resurrection

According to the Coptic faith, there is no salvation except through the blood of shed on the Cross. Even the Mother of God, the, was a human being who required the redemption of her Son. In her praise (the Magnificat), she clearly stated: "My spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior" (Luke 1:47).

Until the Lord descended into Hades (the place of waiting) after His death on the Cross, the gates of Paradise were closed to all, including the righteous like Abraham, Moses, and David. Therefore, the actual entry into Paradise for the Virgin Mary was made possible only after the Cross.

2. The Application: Sanctification Before the Cross

While the act of salvation happened on the Cross, the Virgin Mary was uniquely prepared for her role. The Coptic Church teaches that she was chosen from all generations and was sanctified by the Holy Spirit.

  • The Annunciation: When the Archangel Gabriel appeared to her, the Holy Spirit came upon her, and the power of the Highest overshadowed her. At this moment, she was purified so that the Son of God could take flesh from her pure blood.
  • A "Pre-Redemption": St. Cyril of Alexandria and other Alexandrian Fathers teach that the Word of God would not dwell in a vessel that was under the dominion of sin. Therefore, while she was saved by the Cross, she was kept in a state of supreme holiness and purity in anticipation of that sacrifice.

3. Contrast with Other Denominations

  • Heretics and Protestants: Many Protestants attempt to diminish the status of the Virgin Mary by suggesting she was just an "ordinary sinner." This is a rejection of the truth. She is the "Second Heaven" and the "Golden Censer."
  • The Roman Catholic View: We also differ from the Roman Catholic dogma of the "Immaculate Conception" (the idea that she was born without original sin). Coptic Orthodoxy teaches that she inherited the mortality and the fallen nature of Adam like all humans, but through her own will and the grace of God, she never committed actual sin, and she was definitively redeemed by the blood of Christ on the Cross.

Summary: Her salvation was accomplished by the Cross, but the grace of that salvation sanctified her before the Cross so that she could become the mother of the Savior. She was the first to receive the fruits of the salvation that her Son would eventually fulfill for the whole world.
