Is Jesus descended from Rachel or Leah?

According to the Holy Scriptures and the genealogy of our Lord Jesus Christ, He is a descendant of Leah.
The lineage is traced as follows:
1. The Tribe of Judah
The Messiah was prophesied to come from the tribe of Judah. In the book of Genesis, Judah was the fourth son born to Jacob and his first wife, Leah.
- Genesis 29:35: "And she conceived again and bore a son, and said, 'Now I will praise the Lord.' Therefore she called his name Judah. Then she stopped bearing."
2. The Prophecy of Jacob
Before his death, Jacob gave a blessing to his sons. Concerning Judah, he prophesied:
"The scepter shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh comes; and to Him shall be the obedience of the people" (Genesis 49:10). This "Shiloh" is understood by the Church Fathers as the Christ.
3. The Davidic Lineage
The New Testament confirms this lineage in the Gospels of St. Matthew and St. Luke. Jesus is the "Son of David," and King David was from the tribe of Judah.
- Hebrews 7:14 explicitly states: "For it is evident that our Lord arose from Judah."
Why Not Rachel?
While Rachel was Jacob’s beloved wife, her children were Joseph and Benjamin.
- Joseph’s descendants formed the tribes of Ephraim and Manasseh.
- Benjamin’s descendants included figures like King Saul and St. Paul the Apostle.
However, the promised King and High Priest, came through the line of Leah. This is a profound example of God’s sovereignty; though Leah was "unloved" or "less favored" by man compared to Rachel, God chose her lineage to bring the Savior into the world.
As noted in the Orthodox Study Bible, while we are born into a physical family, our true standing comes from being born of God's promise. Leah, through her faithfulness and her son Judah, became the matriarch of the Messianic line.
