Is drinking alcohol a sin?

In the Coptic Orthodox Church, the view on alcohol is governed by the principles of sobriety, stewardship, and temperance. The Church teaches that while the substance itself (wine/alcohol) is not inherently evil, its misuse is a grave sin that leads to the destruction of both soul and body.
1. Stewardship of the Temple
Our bodies are the temple of the Holy Spirit. As St. John Chrysostom noted, the bishop and all believers must take care of the body so they may minister and be useful to the Church. To intentionally ingest substances that impair the mind and damage the liver and brain is a violation of our duty to care for God's creation.
2. The Commandment of Sobriety
The New Testament and the writings of the Church Fathers are very clear regarding drunkenness. St. Paul explicitly lists "drunkards" among those who will not inherit the Kingdom of God (1 Corinthians 6:10).
- Sobriety: This is considered the "mother of virtues."
- Drunkenness: St. Jerome and other Fathers describe drunkenness as the "mother of vices." When a person is under the influence of alcohol, they lose their "watchfulness".
