Fr. Sargious Sargious (Abouna Sargious Sargious) is not a member of the Holy Synod.
The Holy Synod consists exclusively of the Pope, Metropolitans, and Bishops. Fr. Sargious is a Protosyngellos (General Vicar) for the Patriarchate in Cairo.
1. The Role of Protosyngellos (General Vicar)
Fr. Sargious Sargious holds a very high administrative position as the Patriarchal Vicar in Cairo. In this capacity, he represents the Pope in many administrative, legal, and governmental matters. Because of this high-ranking office, he is often seen standing with the Bishops, attending major events, and speaking on behalf of the Patriarchate. However, holding a high administrative office does not change his ecclesiastical rank from a Priest to a Bishop.
2. Attendance vs. Membership
While Fr. Sargious may be present at the headquarters during Holy Synod sessions or may even be called upon by the Pope to provide administrative reports or handle logistical matters for the synodal committees, he does not have a seat, a voice, or a vote in the official sessions of the Holy Synod. The Synod is the assembly of the "Successors of the Apostles," and in the Orthodox Faith, only the Bishops hold that specific sacramental and legislative authority over the whole Church.
3. Clear Distinction of Ranks
In the Coptic Orthodox Church, we do not follow the "democratic" or "representative" models found in Protestant denominations, where a priest or layperson might sit on a governing board with equal authority to a bishop.
- Fr. Sargious Sargious is a prominent and respected Higumen and a dedicated servant of the Patriarchate.
- The Holy Synod remains the council of the Episcopacy.
It is important not to confuse administrative prominence with synodal membership.
