What is the Immaculate Conception, and how does the Coptic Orthodox Church understand it?

In the Coptic Orthodox Church, we do not accept the Roman Catholic dogma of the Immaculate Conception.

The Roman Catholic dogma (defined in 1854) claims that the Virgin Mary was preserved from the stain of "Original Sin" from the very first moment of her conception in her mother’s womb.

1. The Nature of Ancestral Sin

The primary reason for the disagreement is a difference in how we define "Original Sin."

  • The Western/Roman View: They often view Original Sin as an inherited legal guilt. Therefore, they believe Mary needed a special "exemption" from this guilt to be a fit vessel for Christ.
  • The Coptic Orthodox View: We believe in Ancestral Sin. We do not inherit the guilt of Adam, but rather the consequences of his sin: mortality, corruption, and a tendency toward sin. Because Mary was a human being born of the seed of Joachim and Anna, she inherited this fallen human nature. If she were "exempt" from the human condition, she would not be truly like us, and Christ would not have taken His humanity from our actual nature.

2. The Need for Redemption

If the Virgin Mary were born "immaculate" (without the need for cleansing), she would not have needed a Savior. However, in the Gospel of Luke, Mary herself says, "My spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior" (Luke 1:47).

In Coptic theology, Mary is the "First among the Redeemed." She was saved by the merit of her Son’s death on the Cross, just like the rest of humanity. The difference is that she was chosen and sanctified in a unique way.

3. When Was She Sanctified?

According to the Coptic tradition and the writings of the Fathers, such as St. John of Damascus, the sanctification of the Virgin Mary happened at the Annunciation.

  • When the Archangel Gabriel appeared to her, the Holy Spirit "overshadowed" her.
  • As stated in our authorized theological texts, the Holy Spirit cleansed her and made her holy, preparing her for the Divine message.
  • Source 1 notes that the Word of God, before dwelling in her, caused His sanctifying power to overshadow her, cleanse her, and make her holy. This proves she required a moment of cleansing by the Holy Spirit prior to the Incarnation, which would be unnecessary if she had been born "immaculate."

4. Her Perpetual Virginity and Purity

Rejecting the "Immaculate Conception" does not mean we believe Mary was a "sinner" in the way common people are.

  • We believe she is the Full of Grace and the most pure of all humanity.
  • She is "more honorable than the Cherubim and more glorious than the Seraphim."
  • She remained a Virgin before, during, and after the birth of Christ (Perpetual Virginity).

5. Why the Dogma Is a Heresy to Us

By claiming Mary was born outside the human condition of corruption, the Roman Catholics inadvertently distance Christ from our real humanity. As the Fathers say: "That which is not assumed is not healed." Christ took His flesh from a woman who was part of our fallen race so that He could heal and restore that very race.

The Coptic Church honors the Virgin Mary as the Panagia (All-Holy), but we maintain the biblical and patristic truth that she was a daughter of Adam who was sanctified by the Holy Spirit to become the Mother of God. We do not accept the 19th-century inventions of the Roman Church that contradict the universal tradition of the first centuries.
