How many Coptic Orthodox martyrs are there?

When teaching children, you can tell them that while only God knows the exact number, historians and Church tradition estimate that there are nearly 800,000 to over 1,000,000 martyrs in the Coptic Orthodox Church.

To help them understand why the number is so high, you can explain these three things:

  1. The Era of Diocletian: During the "Great Persecution" (which is why our Coptic calendar is called the Year of the Martyrs or), thousands of people were martyred every single day. In some cities, so many people came forward to confess Christ that the executioners grew tired before the Christians did.
  2. Whole Cities and Armies: We don't just have individual saints; we have entire groups. For example, you can tell them about the 8,140 martyrs of Akhmim or the 6,666 soldiers of the Theban Legion. When you add up all these large groups mentioned in the Synaxarium, the number becomes massive very quickly.
  3. The "Cloud of Witnesses": We call our church the "Church of Martyrs" because, for nearly 2,000 years, from the time of St. Mark the Apostle until today, Coptic Christians have chosen to die rather than deny their faith in our Lord Jesus Christ.

A great way to summarize it for children is to say: "There are more Coptic martyrs than there are seats in ten large football stadiums!" This helps them visualize the "great cloud of witnesses" (Hebrews 12:1) that prays for us in heaven.
