This sense of peace you are feeling is a profound spiritual indicator. In the Coptic Orthodox tradition, we often look for "The Peace of God" as the ultimate confirmation of His will.
St. Anthony the Great taught that the hallmark of a spirit coming from God is that it brings immediately a state of tranquility, joy, and peace to the soul. In contrast, the "counsel of the enemy" or following our own misguided desires usually results in inner turmoil, anxiety, or a "heavy" heart.
When your human will aligns with the Divine Will, you experience what the Fathers call Synergy (working together with God). You asked Him to intervene, He did, and now your heart is at rest rather than in mourning. This is a great blessing for several reasons:
- Freedom from Entanglement: It is often very difficult to detach from a "close friend," especially when helping them. That you feel happy rather than guilty or lonely is a sign that the Holy Spirit is sustaining you and confirming that your helper role with her has reached its natural conclusion.
- Clarity of Purpose: This peace allows you to focus your energy back on your spiritual life and your own path without the distraction of a personality mismatch that would have eventually caused friction.
- Validation of Prayer: This experience strengthens your "prayer muscles." You prayed a specific prayer (to guard your heart), and you saw a specific result. This builds a history of trust between you and God.
As you move forward, continue to offer a prayer of thanksgiving for this clarity. As we pray in the Morning Prayer of the Agpeya: "Let us give thanks to the doer of good and the merciful God... for He has covered us, helped us, guarded us, accepted us unto Him, spared us, supported us, and brought us to this hour."
Stay firm in this peace and do not let nostalgia or "checking in" out of curiosity break the barrier God has graciously provided. If He has closed the door and given you peace about it, leave the door closed and walk forward in His light.
