Do you think believing in scientific findings debunks the Bible?

True science can never debunk the Bible, because both have the same Source—God. However, we must distinguish between demonstrable science and secular philosophical interpretations (scientism).
1. The Source of Truth
We believe that God is the Creator of the physical world and the Author of the Holy Scriptures. Therefore, there can be no real contradiction between the "Book of Nature" and the "Book of Scripture." If there appears to be a conflict, it is either because:
- Humanity has misinterpreted the Scriptures (reading poetry as literal history, or vice versa), or
- Scientists are working with incomplete data or biased philosophical assumptions.
2. The Limits of Science
Scientific research is a tool for exploring the present physical world. It is an unsuitable tool for investigating the Act of Creation because creation cannot be repeated in a laboratory or observed by human eyewitnesses.
- "Creation is not something science can properly investigate because it cannot reproduce it as an experiment."
- Science deals with how things function now; the Bible deals with why we exist and who brought us into being.
3. "Science" as an Anti-God Agenda
Many modern "findings"—specifically Darwinian evolution—are not purely scientific but are "a deliberate attempt to deny God."
- Darwinism is often promoted to provide a narrative of existence that excludes a Creator.
- The fossil record actually contradicts Darwinism (e.g., the "Cambrian Explosion," where complex life appeared suddenly without precursors).
- Believing in these specific secular theories does conflict with the Bible because they deny the special creation of Adam and the historical reality of the Fall, which is the foundation of our need for salvation through.
4. The Pitfall of "Correcting" the Bible
When people try to change the Bible to fit the current scientific trend, they often fall into heresy. For example, if one rejects the 900-year lifespans or the Global Flood because "science says so," one eventually has to reject the Virgin Birth and the Resurrection, as these also "defy" secular biological laws.
- Just as there are mysteries in Nature that we cannot resolve, there are mysteries in Scripture. The reverent procedure is to refer the knowledge of these matters to God rather than dismissing the Word of God as false.
5. Proper Orthodox Understanding
The Coptic Orthodox Church has always been a beacon of learning (through the Catechetical School of Alexandria). We do not fear science. We believe:
- Archaeology can confirm biblical sites and people.
- Medicine is a gift from God to heal.
- Physics reveals the order of the universe.
However, when "science" makes claims about the distant past (millions of years) or the origin of life that contradict the Divine Revelation given to us, we stand with the Truth of the Church. We recognize that secular timelines are often built on the "satanic agenda" to demoralize man and make him feel like an accidental animal rather than a child of God.
Conclusion:
Believing in scientific facts (what can be observed and proven) does not debunk the Bible. But accepting secular naturalism (the belief that only the physical exists and God is unnecessary) is a rejection of the Faith. We do not need to be "politically correct"; the Bible is the ultimate authority, and human "science" is a growing, often flawed, human endeavor.
