Did God the Son or God the Father create the world?

In Orthodox theology, creation is the undivided work of the Holy Trinity—the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit act as one God, possessing one divine will, one essence, and one creative power.
Neither the Father alone nor the Son alone created the world. Rather, God the Father created all things through God the Son in the Holy Spirit.
1. The Undivided Action of the Trinity
The Holy Trinity is one in essence and undivided. Every divine act toward creation (ad extra) is shared by all three divine Persons:
- The Father is the unbegotten Fountainhead (fons divinitatis) who wills and initiates all things.
- The Son is the eternal Word (Logos) and Wisdom of God through whom all things are brought into being.
- The Holy Spirit gives life, perfects, and sustains creation.
As the Church confesses in the Nicene-Constantinopolitan Creed:
"I believe in one God, God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and of all things seen and unseen. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God... by whom all things were made..."
2. Biblical Testimony
Scripture reveals this unified divine work throughout the Old and New Testaments:
- Genesis 1:1–3 & 1:26:
- "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth" (the Father).
- "And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters" (the Holy Spirit co-creating and giving life).
- "Then God said, 'Let there be light'"—God spoke His Word, the eternal Son, through whom the light and all creation were called out of nothing.
- In Genesis 1:26, God says, "Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness"—the plural directly revealing the consultation and co-operation of the divine Persons.
- The Gospel of St. John:
- "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God... All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made" (John 1:1, 3).
- The Epistles of St. Paul:
- "Yet for us there is one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we for Him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, through whom are all things, and through whom we live" (1 Corinthians 8:6).
- "For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible... All things were created through Him and for Him. And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist" (Colossians 1:16–17).
3. Refutation of the Arian Heresy
In the fourth century, the heretic Arius blasphemously taught that God first created the Son as an instrument or creature and then used this creature to make the rest of the universe.
St. Athanasius the Apostolic and the Council of Nicaea (AD 325) completely dismantled this lie:
- The Son is not a creature; He is "begotten, not made, of one essence with the Father".
- What is begotten of God shares the very nature and eternity of God. There was never a time when the Father was not Father; therefore, the Son has existed eternally with Him.
- When Scripture states that the Father created through the Son, it does not mean the Son was an inferior tool or servant. It demonstrates the eternal communion, equal divinity, and identical power of the Father and the Son, who co-created the universe together out of nothing.
Therefore, the Father created the world, and the Son created the world—not as two separate creators or two distinct acts, but as one God acting through His eternal Word in His Holy Spirit.
