Has confession over the phone been introduced since COVID-19?

In the Orthodox Church, the Sacrament of Repentance and Confession cannot be administered remotely or over the phone. While the COVID-19 pandemic caused significant disruptions, the Holy Synod did not institute or approve "confession over the phone" as a valid sacramental mystery.

1. The Physical Nature of the Sacraments

Orthodox sacramental theology is fundamentally incarnational and physical. The Holy Mysteries require the physical presence of both the minister (the bishop or priest) and the recipient.

In the Sacrament of Confession:

  • The penitent sits physically before their spiritual father (Abouna).
  • At the conclusion of the confession, the priest places the Cross and his hand directly upon the head of the penitent while praying the Absolution.
  • This laying on of hands is an indispensable, tangible component of the sacramental rite through which the Holy Spirit operates to grant remission of sins, as given by Christ to the Apostles: "Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained" (John 20:22–23).

2. Pastoral Guidance vs. The Sacramental Mystery

During the peak of the pandemic and government lockdowns, many priests utilized the phone or virtual platforms strictly for pastoral counseling, spiritual guidance, and listening to the burdens of their spiritual children who were isolated.

However, this pastoral communication is not the Sacrament of Confession:

  • A priest could offer spiritual advice, prayers, or comfort over the phone.
  • The formal prayer of Absolution with the laying on of hands cannot be pronounced through electronic devices or over telephone lines.
  • When churches reopened or when the priest was able to visit, the penitent was still required to receive the physical Absolution in person before partaking of the Holy Mysteries (the Eucharist).

3. Canonical and Synodal Stance

The Church has always held fast to the Apostolic canons:

  • Technology can never be a medium for imparting sacramental grace.
  • Sacraments such as Baptism, Chrismation, the Eucharist, Unction of the Sick, and Confession demand real-world, physical communion within the Body of Christ.
  • Any idea that modern technology replaces the canonical, physical order of the Church is a departure from Orthodox tradition.

Therefore, while phone calls served as a temporary pastoral lifeline during lockdowns, sacramental confession remains strictly an in-person mystery.
