The Coptic Orthodox Church commemorates the departure of the Apostolic Father, Abba Athanasius the Apostolic, the 20th Pope of Alexandria, on:
- 7 Pashons: This is his primary feast day, marking his departure to the heavenly paradise in the year 373 A.D.
Furthermore, there are other significant commemorations related to his life and the miracles associated with him:
- 30 Thout: The commemoration of a great miracle performed by St. Athanasius.
- 20 Bashans: The commemoration of the return of his holy relics from Rome to Egypt in 1973, during the papacy of H.H. Pope Shenouda III. This was a monumental event where his body was returned to the Cathedral of St. Mark in Cairo after being away for many centuries.
In every Divine Liturgy, we also commemorate him in the Diptych/Commemoration of the Saints as "the Apostolic, the light of the darkness." His steadfastness against the Arian heretics is a pillar of our faith, and he is rightfully honored as one of the greatest defenders of Orthodoxy in the history of the world.
